HSC ECONOMICS holiday Workshops 2010

The HSC Economics school holiday workshops are designed to help students consolidate their knowledge and maximise their marks in the HSC exam. The workshops focus upon exam strategy, current economics news and events and offer a broad structural approach to the HSC course to help students better understand and remember the HSC Economics course.

During each school holiday period, Leading Edge offers an Economics Revision Workshop which reviews the material covered in the school term prior – focusing on developing an understanding the topic area as a whole – and also examines the next topic to be covered in the upcoming school term, helping to give students a head start before they return to school. The content of each Economics Revision Workshop varies from term to term as we follow the content of the HSC Economics Syllabus. For further details, see below.

Two other workshops are offered alongside the Economics Revision Workshop, which complement its focus on HSC content. The Exam Strategy Workshop focuses on exam strategies and techniques for the HSC Economics exam. This workshop is offered at every school holiday session, and a student wishing to attend this workshop need only attend once in the year: the same workshop repeats each school holiday period. In addition, in the July and September school holidays, Leading Edge offers the Advanced Economics Workshop which is a half day workshop focused upon a few key areas of the HSC syllabus of which a more advanced understanding is of great advantage in the HSC Economics Exam. The content of this workshop focuses upon the recent drivers of the domestic and international business cycle, as well as a few often-neglected areas of the syllabus which are important in the HSC Economics Exam. Students have an option of attending this workshop in either the July or September school holidays (this workshop is the same in each session).

The Leading Edge workshops are interactive seminar-based classes. Active participation is encouraged, and students will be given many opportunities to practise the skills they have learnt during the workshop. The workshops are not lectures: they are designed to help students understand key content in an interactive environment. At each workshop, students will receive a comprehensive workshop booklet with up-to-date content and activities. For more information about each workshop, and the dates on offer for the upcoming year, see below (however, please note that dates for upcoming terms are subject to final confirmation).

Workshop Discounts: Any student who attends more than one workshop (in Economics or Business Studies) in any school holiday period will receive an automatic 10 per cent discount off the total price of the workshops.

The workshops in Detail...

HSC Economics REVISION Workshop

The HSC Economics Revision workshops provide a review of each HSC Economics course topic covered in the previous term and an overview of the content to be covered in the upcoming school term. This workshop is designed to help students get on top of the important structural aspects of the HSC Economics course, and to understand how key economic concepts are linked and interact. The workshop focuses upon recent events and data in the Australian and Global economy to help students better-understand the HSC Economics course.

The content of the HSC Economics Revision Workshop varies from term to term, with four workshops on offer in total throughout the year. Each workshop is two half-days, usually with either morning (9:00am-12:45pm) or afternoon sessions (1:15pm-5:00pm).

  1. HSC Economics Revision Workshop 1 – 18+19 January (Mon & Tues)
    Revision of Topic 1: Globalisation, and an introduction to Topic 2: Australia and the Global Economy, focusing on recent developments in the global economy, and in Australia's current account and exchange rate.
  2. HSC Economics Revision Workshop 2 – 12+13 April (Mon & Tues)
    Revision of both Topic 1: Globalisation and Topic 2: Australia and the Global Economy (concentrating more on Topic 2) and an introduction to Topic 3: Economic Issues, focusing on the recent performance in Australia's current account and exchange rate, as well as an introduction to the current state of and outlook for the domestic economy in the areas of Economic Growth, Unemployment, Inflation and External Stability. Great preparation for Half-Yearly exams.
  3. HSC Economics Revision Workshop 3 – 12+13 or 15+16 July (Mon & Tues or Thurs & Fri)
    Revision of the first three topics of the HSC syllabus – Topic 1: Globalisation, Topic 2: Australia and the Global Economy and Topic 3: Economic Issues – and an introduction to Topic 4: Economic Management, with a particular focus on the most recent Federal Budget and recent developments in Monetary Policy. The workshop is designed to help students prepare for their HSC Trials.
  4. HSC Economics Revision Workshop 4 – 27+28 September or 30 September + 1 October (Mon & Tues or Thurs & Fri)
    Revision of all four topics in the HSC Economics Syllabus, with particular attention paid to Topics 3 and 4. Designed to help consolidate students' knowledge before the HSC Examination, with particular focus upon the performance of the Australian and Global Economy over the past year, as well as the effectiveness of economic policy.

Cost: $195.00 for each two-day workshop (or $175.50 if you also book into another workshop).
Dates for upcoming terms are subject to final confirmation. If demand requires it, additional sessions may also be offered.

HSC Economics EXAM STRATEGY Workshop

It's not enough just to know a lot of Economics content. Ultimately, students knowledge is measured by how well they can communicate in the exam room. Many students know a lot, but find the task of writing high-scoring HSC Economics exam answers is the most challenging part of the HSC Economics course. Often students who get consistently high marks in the multiple choice and short answer sections of the exam fail to score high marks in their extended responses.

The focus of the Exam Strategy workshop is to give you new ideas for strategy and technique. This workshop will teach you:

  • to create top-notch extended responses;
  • extensive writing tips, including the use of introductions, conclusions, quotes and statistics; and
  • keys to getting more out of your studies.

This workshop repeats each term. A student need only attend this workshop once during the HSC year, as the workshop is essentially the same from term to term.

  1. January: 21+22 (Thurs & Fri)
  2. April: 15+16 (Thurs & Fri)
  3. July: 12+13 (Mon & Tue)
  4. September/October: 30 Sep + 1 Oct (Thurs & Fri)

Cost: $195.00 for each two-day workshop (or $175.50 if you also book into another workshop).
Dates for upcoming terms are subject to final confirmation. If demand requires it, additional sessions may also be offered.

ADVANCED HSC Economics Workshop

The Advanced HSC Economics Workshop provides a more in-depth focus of certain key areas of the syllabus which are designed to provide students with a more advanced understanding of the HSC Economics Course. The content includes:

  • a framework for analysing linkages and conflicts between economic growth and other economic issues;
  • the current and historical context of the Australian economy;
  • an examination of major recent occurrences in the Australian economy;
  • an overview of certain often-neglected areas of the HSC Economics course;
  • advanced exam strategy.

As the workshop requires some familiarity with Topic 3 of the HSC Economics Syllabus, it is only run in the July and September school holidays. Students need only attend this workshop once (as the same workshop is run both in July and September):

  1. 14 July (Wednesday) or
  2. 29 September (Wednesday).

Cost: $115.00 for this one-day workshop (or $103.50 if you also book into another workshop).
Dates for upcoming terms are subject to final confirmation. If demand requires it, additional sessions may also be offered.
