The Internet can be a powerful tool for research in HSC Economics. Across
the web you will find information that gives you up-to-date facts and
figures and some great topical material. All of this is drawn from a diverse
range of viewpoints. Much of this information is published free of charge,
and most of it is updated regularly.
To help you find your way through this mass of information, our Leading
Edge Education team has compiled a comprehensive list of weblinks
for you. Each link has been placed into one of seven helpful categories
and, for most sites, a brief description of that site's content has been
provided.
Online Search Categories for Economics
Latest news
- ABC Online
The latest news is available on this site, which also provides access
to topical news on items such as science, education and indigenous matters.
An important service provided by this site is access to online versions
and archives of ABC programs such as 4 Corners, Lateline, Foreign Correspondent
etc. A search function is also available.
- ANZ
Economic Outlook
An excellent source of current economic issues and events affecting the
Australian economy. The ANZ Economic Outlook is published quarterly and
contains forecasts about the Australian economy as well as other major
economies around the world.
- The Associated Press
One of the major international news agencies, this site contains breaking
news from around the world.
- Australian Financial Review
This site provides up to date information on financial markets as
well as the latest economic developments. It also provides a good update
on news and current affairs.
- The Economist
An excellent site for economics students, this site contains loads
of articles about worldwide economic developments and policies.
- The New York Times
One of the major newspaper in the United States, this site contains
a wealth of articles relating to US and international news.
- Reuters
Another major international news agency, this site contains articles
and news from around the world.
- The Sydney Morning Herald
This site provides the latest news in Australia and abroad. The focus
may not be economics, but policy announcements will be reported here.
- The Wall Street Journal
The largest financial newspaper in the United States, the Wall Street
Journal writes articles on economic and financial happenings in the US
and overseas. Check this site regularly for overseas news.
- The Washington
Post
One of the main newspapers of the United States, the Washington Post
web site contains lots of articles relating to US domestic and international
policy. Articles are archived for two weeks and can be accessed via a
search engine.

Latest Australian Stats
GlobStat is a useful website for understanding the links between globalisation
and development. It has statistics and explanations of the key
trends of globalisation, including economic and demographic trends, trade
and financial flows, and transnational corporations.
Australian
National Accounts summary, Australian Bureau of Statistics.
This site gives an overview of the most recent statistics on the performance
of the Australian economy.

This speech provides a good background to some of the latest developments
in the global economy. It also examines some of the causes of Australia's
slowing growth rate in 2005.
Australian
Financial Review “Economy Check”
This site has a set of interactive graphs that allow you to follow trends
in Australia’s key indicators over the past decade.
- Australian Bureau of
Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE)
This site provides some information not availiable from government
departments. You are able to access its recent media releases which have
information most useful to students interested in industry or agricultural
economics. However, ABARE's more formal publications are not free online.
- Australian Bureau of
Statistics
This site provides statistics on the Australian economy. It provides
current statistics under the heading Key National Indicators on National
Accounts, International Accounts, Consumption and Investment etc. Note
however, that some detailed information is available upon subscription
only.
- Australian Stock Exchange
Find the latest stock market-related news, real-time stock market
data, information on stock market trading activity and information on
stock market listed companies with links to more detailed company information.
- Australian Council
of Social Services (ACOSS)
This site contains information on Australian unemployment, welfare,
jobseeking and other social service issues. The ACOSS site also provides
a link to its library resources, including access to full text articles
of some of its research and policy papers.
- Australian Policy Online
This website provides updated links to new economics research and
publications from Australian policy centres and institutes. It is an outstanding
resource and can save a long time wandering through web search engines.
There is an enormous amount of very high quality research that the site
links to, and it also includes a search engine for the site. It also includes
extensive information on other policy issues besides Economics and Trade,
many of which are relevant to economics.
- Make Trade Fair
(global trade campaign)
This site is run by Oxfam, a large international non-government organisation.
It contains various issues associated with international trade, specifically
looking at the negative impacts of the current trading system on develping
economies.
- Melbourne
Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research
This site gives some introductory information into research projects
concerned with specific areas of economics such as economic growth and
business cycles. It also gives introductions to publications produced
by the institute such as The Australian Economic Review. Most importantly,
it provides links to some other useful sites.
- National
Centre for Social and Economic Modelling, University of Canberra
This department is concerned with economic modelling of policy changes
and the general economic environment. As such, its scope incudes such
areas as the impact of the GST, changes to social security programmes
and income distribution. This site is great because it provides critical
evaluation of policies and environment (not just statistics). It has dicussion
papers on specific issues that are easily downloaded (though some can
be a bit technical).

Australian Government Sites
- Austrade
The Austrade Home page provides detailed information on Australia's
trading activities with various world regions and countries through its www.austrade.gov.au/studentcentre/extension.
Current trade deal information as well as media releases of the past two
years may be obtained on this site at www.austrade.gov.au/mediacentre.
- Australian Bureau of
Statistics
A wealth of information regarding key Australian economic performance
is available on this site. It provides current statistics under the heading
Key National Indicators on National Accounts, International Accounts,
Consumption and Investment etc. Note however, that some detailed information
is available upon subscription only.
- Australian Department
of Foreign Affairs and Trade
This site sets out Australias trade policies as well as our
involvement in Trade Agreements. It provides good useful information concerning
APEC, CERTA, WTO and the like all from an Australian perspective. Furthermore,
their "Other Country Information" provides a great summary on
economic and political outlooks for those countries. Definitely a must.
- Australian Department
of Industry, Tourism and Resources
The Department website provides detailed industry-related information
according to the various sectors, as well as access to departmental event
information and publications.
- Australian Federal Government
Details on the Australian Parliamentary system are available on this
site. It also provides a search function (however, note that the information
may be too specific), as well as links to the various State web sites.
- National Competition
Council
The role of the NCC and the competition reform agenda is described.
Particulary useful is the accessible information regarding the legal and
economic implications of increased competition in Australia. There are
also speeches on the policy of the NCC and case studies of the Gas, electricty
and water industries. A particulary useful site for microeconomic reform
information.
- NSW Government
This site also provides information, concerning NSW government policies.
It has a strong focus towards government policies affecting business and
is especially relevant for Business Studies students.
- The Treasury
This site provides an overview on the activities of the Treasury.
It is a good source of detailed information regarding federal budgets
from the period 1996-1997 to date, as well as forecasts for future periods.
The latest Treasury reports also appear on this site, treasury
publications available for download. Please note such primary
materials are very dense and is only recommended for teachers.

- The Australian Prudential
Regulatory Authority (APRA)
The main regulatory body for banks, insurance companies and superannuation
funds, APRA provides lots of information and recent news about the banking
industry. Check this site for banking regulations and for links to other
bank sites.
- The Australian Stock
Exchange
Find the latest stock market-related news, real-time stock market
data, information on stock market trading activity and information on
stock market listed companies with links to more detailed company information.
- International Monetary
Fund
This site provides IMF reports into countries around the world, available
for download. Unfortunately there are no longer statistics summaries on
this site.
- The New York Stock Exchange
This site contains the latest updates on the United States stock market.
Check regularly for updates on the trading activity and detailed company
information.
- The Reserve Bank of
Australia
This site contains loads of information about the RBA, including the
structure and history of the Bank, as well as interesting articles about
recent monetary policy and recent publications and statistics. Great site!
- The
World Bank
This particular part of the World Banks sites provide data tables
for countries around the world. The
"youthink section" of the site is also good in providing
background for these countries. You can also find information about a
particular region in the world, which you can use to compare to a country
in the region.

International Reports and Statistics
- United Nations Millennium
Project
This site provides statistics and reports on the United Nations Millennium
Development Goals. It is a good site for information on contrasts in standards
of living and the causes of inequality in the global economy.
- Asia Pacific Economic
Cooperation (APEC)
This site is run by the United States. All the information here pertains
to the US perspective on world economic affairs. It does provides some
useful facts but, overall, this site is very limited.
- Association of South
East Asian Nations (ASEAN)
This is a site for those studying the ASEAN as well as the Asian Crisis.
It provides information on their policies, however information is very
limited.
- The Economist
This international magazine on economics, finance and current affairs
provide a web site with information from their latest issue. However,
most information is only available to subscribers at a cost. If the information
you are looking for is not in the current issue, forget about it! Nonetheless,
check this site regularly.
- The Far East Asian Economic
Review
Another magazine turned web site. This site provides articles to their
magazine which is restricted to Asian economies. There is no charge for
this site. However, there are no statistics either.
- International Monetary
Fund
The sites provide IMF reports into countries around the world, available
for download. Unfortunately there are no longer statistics summaries on
this site.
- The
World Bank
This particular part of the World Banks sites provide data tables
for countries around the world. The "Schools" section of the
site is also good in providing background for these countries aits country
data section.
- The World Trade Organisation
The internet site of the WTO provides information on their policies.
This is a good site for those that are completing assignments on such
a topic. Statistics are limited to "Trade Statistics".

- Education Network Australia

A valuable search engine is available at this site, providing access
to a wealth of information sources according to the subject being researched.
- Commanding
Heights
Website of a US-made documentary on globalisation. Very useful for discussion
of impacts of globalisation, and background information for your case
study country.
- NSW Board
of Studies
This is a very important site for all HSC students. It contains information
about the HSC, including past papers and syllabus. HSC results will also
eventually be posted on this site. Definitely one to bookmark.
- World Wide Web
Resources in Economics
If information is required on Economic matters with an international
focus, this site provides access to an enormous amount of information
including research papers, statistics, reports etc. Microeconomics, Macroeconomics,
Financial Economics, Economic History, Economic Systems, Economic Methodology
and HIstory are just a few of the areas in which information is available.
It also provides a search function, as well as links to other relevant
sites. You can also find some great 'Economics' Jokes!
